The following two images show WSJT-X picking signals out of the noise. Later on my interference returned, but to my surprise WSJT-X kept on decoding. WSPR beaconing but with option for proper QSO contacts)! They take WSPR a step further, and with reverse beacon networks such as PSK Reporter you’ve got everything you need (ie. So, if you’re yet to try these modes then I highly recommend them. It’s amazing how quickly the time passes by with these modes. bi-directional) DX contact.Īfter that, I was hooked and tried a few more, but often shooting too far (15,000+ kms). Anyway, the one I was most impressed with was with HA1AD. My first was with VK5HAM but I made a fair mess of things as I wasn’t as comfortable with the UI as I thought I was.

So I wonder if maybe that’s had a flow on effect to those running on Windows XP (such as my shack PC).Īnyway, at least I have a version that works (just a shame some nice waterfall improvements came in in version 1.2) so I proceeded to try some contacts.

Further, looking at a WSJT-X changelog I note there were changes starting with 1.2 about how the sound hardware was accessed. Since then I’ve tried again with version 1.3 and also 1.2.1 (a couple of times), but for the sake of me I can not get decodes with either – oh, except a single decode once… And looking on pskreporter (a great site BTW) it would seem very few are using the latest version of WSJT-X. Both in single JT65 mode (for which there seems greater activity) and also in split mode decoding both JT65 and JT9 transmissions.

I proceeded to download WSJT-X 1.1 and lo’ an’ behold suddenly I was decoding signals left right and centre. Each transmission begins at t 1s after the start of a UTC minute and finishes at t 47.8 s. JT65 gets '65' from the 65 tones it uses. The most popular submode of JT65 is JT65A. Note: The HB9HQX-Edition (and the built in JT65-Log) provides receive and transmit messages only in JT65. QSO before, new DXCC or new Grid) with two filter settings, only JT65 or both JT65 + JT9. JT65 has 3 submodes: JT65A, JT65B, and JT65C. If you use an external log (like HRD Logbook, WSJT-X or ADIF) you can show statistical informations (e.g. Further, it seemed maybe that for those who had troubles all used to work with version 1.1 of WSJT-X. JT65 is an amateur radio QSO communication protocol developed by Joe Taylor, K1JT.

But still nothing…Ī bit of searching around the net revealed I wasn’t the only person who had troubles decoding with WSJT-X. I then proceeded to just give it time and let it run some 24 hours. JT9 uses much less bandwidth, and signals can be much closer together than JT65. I am finding that making JT9 contacts, works just like JT65, though the underlying protocols being sent over the air are different. WSJT-X will do both JT65 and JT9 but JT65-HF will only do JT65. I was sure of success as it was when there was no interference (for once) and I had heaps of JT65 signals roaring in and system time was in sync to ~100 milliseconds. Another popular program that’s available is JT65-HF. However, first attempts to receive were a complete fail. I’d not come across it before (possibly being side tracked with WSPR), but before I knew it I was downloading WSJT-X, reading the tutorial and running it up.

I hoped to do this in PKT mode, but the width is fixed at a maximum of 2.4KHz in this mode, but in USB you can set the bandwidth to 4KHz (I struggled to see this full bandwidth in the waterfall until I remembered that I had a 3KHz roofing filter in line - doh!).Last week I came across JT9 as a mode for DX on HF. I have completely failed to find way to do this with my FT-DX-3000, but have managed to get the FT-DX-5000 configured to do this. To do this you need a radio capable of a wide RX - 4KHz required here for the full spectrum of both types of transmission.

#JT65 AND JT9 SOFTWARE#

The latest and greatest piece of software from the gang that develop the WSJT software, more specifically WSJT-X, have now included a bi-lingual feature! The software can receive both JT65 and JT9 at the same time! Now, JT9 is typically found 2KHz above this, so on 20M this would need a dial frequency of 14.078. Now JT65 has proved popular on the HF bands generally, and, for example on 20M, you would find JT65 with a dial frequency on USB of 14.076. JT65 was designed for V/UHF comms and JT9 was designed for L/MF. A while ago I had a play with JT9 - its a cousin of the popular JT65.
